About the Camps

Welcome to the BYU Cyber Camp, an immersive and cutting-edge experience designed to captivate the imaginations of young minds in the exciting realm of cybersecurity. Our week-long camp, tailored for youth aged 13-18, is not just a learning journey but a thrilling adventure into the future of technology. At the BYU Cyber Camp, participants dive into the world of artificial intelligence and machine learning, gaining hands-on experience with the tools and techniques used to secure and enhance advanced technologies. With expert instructors drawn from the forefront of the cybersecurity industry, campers explore how AI and machine learning contribute to both the defense and challenges within the digital landscape.

The camp is not just about theory; it's a dynamic blend of education and entertainment. Campers engage in interactive game design workshops, where they learn to create cybersecurity-themed games that not only entertain but also educate players about the importance of online security. Throughout the week, participants showcase their newly acquired skills in friendly competitions and challenges, fostering teamwork and strategic thinking. The highlight of the BYU Cyber Camp is a cybersecurity-themed starship simulator. By incorporating AI, machine learning, game design, and competitions, the BYU Cyber Camp ensures that young enthusiasts not only understand the fundamentals of cybersecurity but also leave with practical skills and a passion for the ever-evolving world of digital security.

The BYU Youth Cyber Camps take place in June in the Tanner Building on BYU Campus. They are for non-college students ages 13 - 18. Dr. Giboney and the student team are excited to host two cybersecurity camps this summer (2024). Each is a week-long series of learning activities designed to introduce students to various cybersecurity topics. We aim to make each workshop interesting and interactive.

The BYU IT and Cybersecurity Department hosted our first Girls' Cybersecurity Camp in 2015. Nearly 40 girls attended for four days to learn about a variety of introductory cybersecurity topics. The camp was open for ages 14-18 and was funded by generous sponsorship from Microsoft and Facebook. Pre and post-surveys showed significant growth in interest with over 80% of attendees wanting to keep learning about cybersecurity.

Camp runs from 8:00AM - 3:30PM every day. We do not provide housing for attendees.

We are proud of our hand-on workshops and activities. For example, in 2016 our password security workshop had attendees write a simple password cracker to better understand how computers can be used to attack weak passwords. For our more experienced attendees, an advanced track aims to both entertain and educate. Topics are always varied and diverse, taught by students in the IT&C program, with mentors on hand for one-on-one help. No prior computing knowledge is necessary to participate. If you can use a tablet or smartphone, you are welcome to sign up!

Throughout the camp attendees will also get to experience a cybersecurity spaceship simulator.
